Have you ever seen a place so perfect it looks like a painted stage set?

Welcome to Misurina Lake, Italy. Known affectionately as the "Pearl of the Dolomites," this alpine lake is famous for its shimmering reflections, its healing air, and its role as the gateway to some of the most dramatic peaks in the world: the Cadini di Misurina.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to plan your visit, from the best photo spots to the hiking trails that will take your breath away.

Why you must visit Misurina Lake, Italy

Located at 1,754 meters above sea level in the province of Belluno, Lake Misurina is the largest natural lake in the Cadore region. It’s not just a place for a quick photo; it’s a destination with a unique microclimate.

In fact, the air here is so pure that the only center in Italy for treating childhood asthma is located right on its shores.

Whether you are a professional photographer, a dedicated hiker, or a family looking for a peaceful walk, Misurina Lake, Italy offers a landscape that changes beautifully with every season.

The best things to do at Lake Misurina

1. The lakeside walk

The most popular activity is the easy loop trail around the lake. It’s a flat, 2.6 km path that takes about 40–50 minutes.

  • Photo Tip: head to the southern end of the lake to capture the iconic yellow Grand Hotel Misurina with the Tre Cime di Lavaredo reflecting in the water behind it.

2. Rent a pedalò or rowboat

In the summer months, you can get out onto the water. Being in the center of the lake gives you a 360° view of the Sorapiss, Cristallo, and Cadini di Misurina mountain groups.

3. Winter activities

When the lake freezes over in winter, it becomes a playground for ice skating and even polo matches on ice.

It is also a prime spot for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Hiking to the Cadini di Misurina Viewpoint

If you have social media, you have likely seen the "Towers of Mordor"—the sharp, jagged spires of the Cadini di Misurina. While they overlook the lake, the best way to experience them is by getting up close.

How to reach the iconic viewpoint

To reach the famous Punto Panoramico, you have two main options:

  • The Classic Route (Via Rifugio Auronzo): drive from the lake up the scenic toll road (30€ for cars) to the Tre Cime parking lot. Instead of walking toward the famous "Three Peaks," head south on trail 117. A 30–45 minute hike will lead you to the narrow ridge that offers the most famous view of the Cadini di Misurina.

  • The Col de Varda Chairlift: take the chairlift from the lakeside up to Rifugio Col de Varda. From here, you can hike the Sentiero Bonacossa. This path is more challenging but offers a truly immersive experience into the heart of the Cadini group.

Note: The terrain can be steep and narrow. Proper hiking boots are essential.
