October is one of the most beautiful — and most misunderstood — months in the Dolomites. The summer crowds are largely gone, the forests begin to turn gold and the light becomes softer, but lifts, huts and transport services no longer operate on a full summer schedule. The key is not to plan October like August.

What is still open in Cortina in October 2026?

The current 2026 Dolomiti Superski schedule shows the Falzarego–Lagazuoi cable car running until 18 October and the 5 Torri chairlift until 11 October. Fedare is scheduled until 13 September and Cortina Skyline until 6 September. Always recheck shortly before travelling because weather and operations can change.

Why Cadore works well in autumn

Cadore gives you more than high-altitude hiking. In October you can combine lower and mid-altitude walks, lakes, villages, panoramic roads, e-bike rides when conditions allow, local food and cultural stops. Monte Rite, Lago di Centro Cadore and the valleys beneath Antelao, Pelmo and the Marmarole make it easier to build flexible days without depending on a single lift or hut.

Weather, transport and the best strategy

October can bring clear days, cold mornings, rain or the first snow at altitude. Plan day hikes rather than a rigid hut-to-hut itinerary, keep a lower-altitude backup and check each lift and hut individually. Cortina is easier without a car; in central Cadore a rental car, taxi or private transfer is often much more practical.

FAQ: Dolomites in October 2026

Are the Dolomites worth visiting in October? Yes — especially for fewer people, autumn colours and a slower trip, provided the itinerary stays flexible.

Are all cable cars closed? No. Some operate into October, while others finish in September.

Welcome Dolomiti can organise a flexible October itinerary combining Cadore and Cortina, hiking, e-bike, culture and private transport where useful.
